And We're Going...

We have had three big events since my last update. I'll begin with the most important.

Every year since we moved here we have had the privilege of placing flags at the state veterans' cemetery. I have written about it before and if you'd like to see pictures, you can click here,   here, and here. Such a meaningful way to start Memorial Day weekend. This year we had a wonderful speaker before we placed the flags. He is an Eagle Scout who is also a chaplain. He did a wonderful job of making the sacrifices paid by our military real to all those young men and women there to help.

All finished. Such a beautiful sight.

On a much lighter note, last night the boys went to a Bowie Baysox game. Can you guess what the theme for the night was?

That's right! Mustache night! Everyone with a mustache got in for half price. Our guys had 21 in their group and they made a very impressive facial-hair sight in the stands.

Joshua won 2nd place in the mustache contest, losing out to the one guy in the whole stadium who had a real mustache. Go figure. :)

And this afternoon we were entertained and blessed at the Anchor Baptist Church homeschool recital. Both boys played the piano. I have a picture of them before they began and for some reason forgot to take one during. I'm sure I will see one floating around somewhere and will snag it to show you. I do have a video but I doubt I will figure out how to get it on here. Trust me, though, it was a wonderful occasion. We followed it up with a cookout/luncheon with all our homeschooling friends. Is this the time to mention again how much we will miss them?

Tomorrow is (gasp!) a normal Sunday for us, with perhaps just a teeny bit of sorting and packing to do. Monday is another full day and I'll be sure to update!

God bless each of you and please remember those who have given the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country.

Sit Down, Hang On....

If you would like to keep up with us this weekend, I will do my very best to help you out. This is it. The official busiest weekend of our spring. Filled with all kinds of fun things to do and memories to make. I'm going to be diligent about getting the stories and pictures posted quickly since the computer will get packed next week.

Enjoy the ride.

Up first, Joshua's big outdoors/survival/hobo/cookout party, which really turned into a swimming party.
We had a blast tonight with Joshua's friends. I had big plans for lots of activities but then realized they really all just wanted to hang out together and play. So we scaled back, threw in a little fun, and had a great time.

I love this picture. Look at all those personalities! What a great group of friends both boys have here. We will surely miss them...

We began by making hobo meals (aka "silver turtles"). Hashbrowns, cheese, corn, bacon...the boys got to make their own packets, which went right into the coals of the fire.
Those, combined with fire-roasted hot dogs, made a yummy dinner!

A little after-dinner fun was exploding Diet Coke and Mentos. Always a crowd pleaser.

I didn't get great photos because I was trying to avoid getting sticky...

The boys headed out on a scavenger hunt in the woods next. They worked as a team and had a time limit to find everything on "The List."

They were successful! After checking off all their finds, they got one final clue--which led them to a treasure.

divvying up the goods

The evening was finished up with swimming, s'mores, and sparklers. I like the alliteration. Makes me feel like it was educational. :)

Such a fun evening...and just as everyone left, it started to sprinkle. :) Thank you, God, for holding it off so that little boy could have such a good time with his buddies. Little blessings...so important to notice them.

Pinning and Pinning

I decided it's about time to report on "Pinterest Stuff I've Tried." I try to be purposeful with my pins and, for the most part, not just pin any old thing I see but pin things I really think I'll try/use/make/do. Or at least use as inspiration for something else I'm doing.

I've used a few recipes lately and done one big renovation project (which turned out GREAT!-but you'll have to wait for another post for final pictures). Here they are, with my reviews:

I'll start with these delicious little morsels:
recipe
Baked, breaded cheese"balls", rather than cheese sticks. Yum, yum, yum. We made them twice while my mom and Dorene were here. Have you had the cheesestick appetizers at Applebees? These taste exactly like them but in ball version. Or in our case, blob version. Mine did not stay in beautiful little balls, as in this picture. They melted a bit and kind of blobbed out on the baking stone. I read all the comments and figure that part of my problem was that I did not use fat-free cheese (finally! A use for that stuff). I also read that it helps to pop the breaded balls in the freezer for a little bit before the oven. But no matter, I didn't see anyone minding that they weren't perfectly formed-they were delicious! I did spray the tops of mine with olive oil spray to help them crisp up a bit. She doesn't mention it, but I am guessing she did something like that to the ones in the photo.

Next up,
brown sugar and balsamic glazed pork loin
recipe
I made this on our last official day of visitors. It got RAVE reviews. Like the blogger who created it said, it was extremely delicious and satisfying yet didn't leave us overstuffed. And it was SO EASY. It cooks up in the crock pot. I put it in in the morning and we had for dinner after we went to greet the troops returning to BWI. This is DEFINITELY on our meal rotation list. A bonus is that on the same website they recommend this recipe as an accompaniment:
brussel sprouts with bacon and walnuts
It was a toss up for me, whether I liked the main dish or this side better. Oh my gravy, this was good. And just a delicious reheated the next day for lunch. I did not have walnuts so I used chopped up pistachios. This was GOOD. This entire meal was delicious and simple. I think it'd be perfect to have on a Sunday afternoon when guests are coming for dinner.

This next recipe I've made twice now. Another crockpot recipe and perfect for feeding a crowd:

pulled pork sandwiches
recipe
These pulled pork sandwiches were a pretty big hit. Another very simple recipe--what you see in the picture are the only ingredients. Cooked all day, the pork was perfectly tender and easy to shred. One thing I might do different is to pop it under the broiler for a couple minutes before I serve it next time. Just because I like the ends to be a little crisp. But that's just me. Definitely a recipe worth keeping. Even in North Carolina, where barbecue is king...

Also from Pinterest was this helpful tip about storing berries:
TIP FOR KEEPING BERRIES FROM GOING MOLDY When you get your berries home, prepare a mixture of one part vinegar (white or apple cider probably work best) and ten parts water. Dump the berries into the mixture and swirl around. Drain, rinse if you want (though the mixture is so diluted I find you can't taste the vinegar,) and pop in the fridge. The vinegar kills any mold spores and other bacteria that might be on the surface of the fruit, and voila! Raspberries will last a week or more, and I've had strawberries go almost two weeks without getting moldy and soft.

We went strawberry picking last week and I tried this tip with the mounds of berries we brought home. Well, we made jam out of about half of them, but the rest went into a sinkful of water with vinegar in it. We picked them Friday morning and today, Monday, many of what's left are looking pretty mushy and unappetizing. Not sure what I did wrong--I pretty much followed the directions. It did clean them well (the leftover water was pretty dirty) but doesn't seem to have made any improvement in lasting freshness.

And the last Pinterest-related thing involves a project I've had in the works for a while. Pinterest is so great for tutorials and inspiration. I pinned several things that helped me along. Here are the before pictures:

Not terrible, but could be so much better. And like I said before, you'll have to wait for the after pictures. :)

p.s. Those food photos above are not mine. You can see from the dresser pictures that I am not a professional photographer. I prefer to use beautiful photos done by food bloggers rather than blurry, wonky, unappetizing photos taken by moi. But you can rest assured, our finished product looked just as tasty. Except for the cheese globs. But who cares. They were delicious.

Warm Welcome

One of the really fun things we did while my mom and Aunt Dorene were here was to go to BWI to greet troops and families returning from overseas. Operation Welcome Home MD has been in operation since 2007 and has greeted over 700 flights. It is strictly a volunteer organization, and the staff is so dedicated to its mission. The excitement was contagious-we wanted to stay as long as we could and wish we had gotten involved with them sooner.

We arrived and got straight to work, decorating the international terminal at BWI with signs and banners, made and donated by various groups (schools, scouts, churches...) and individuals.

Then we began stuffing goodie bags. Each returning soldier gets a bag with a bottle of water, crackers, muffins, candy, and a welcome home card (again, made by various groups) and another card explaining what Operation Welcome Home is.

Our group that day was relatively small, but enthusiastic. They never know who's going to show up and sometimes there are close to 100! The troops and families were thrilled at the surprise and it was a joy to get to thank them for their service.

Operation Welcome Home's purpose is to make sure every returning troop is greeted warmly and recognized as the hero he/she is. It's a great organization and anyone can get involved. In addtion to actually greeting the troops, they need volunteers to make welcome home cards and donations of packaged snacks and candy. If you would like to participate in a welcome home event (they do several each week) or would like to make a donation, I'd be glad to give you more information, or you can go to http://www.operationwelcomehomemd.org/.
